RGS 1st XV in Daily Mail Cup Final!

Canterbury Newcastle would like to congratulate The Royal Grammar School 1st XV for reaching the final of the Daily Mail Cup, the most prestigious Independent schools rugby competition in England. Under the management of new director of rugby Andy Watt, the young team have triumphed over some of the country’s most talented school rugby sides, to reach the Daly Mail cup final for the first time in 16 years .

In 1996 RGS also reached the final of the Daily Mail competition whilst under the captaincy of ex- London Irish player Paul Gustard, when they narrowly to Mount St Mary’s. More recently RGS reached the semi-final of the competition in 1999 / 2000 with a side leas by current Newcastle Falcons Guinness Premiership star Matt Thompson.


The final of the competition will be held on Friday 30th March at the country’s most hallowed rugby ground Twickenham. RGS 1st XV team players will be stomping the same green grass as England stars such as Jonny Wilkinson, Lewis Moody and Ugo Monye.


Kited out Canterbury’s revolutionary Everest International Sublimate shirts in their unique black red hooped design RGS will be facing Whitgift in the final. The entire school with be travelling with the RGS boys along with a proud contingency of parents and school alumni who will all be at Twickenham getting behind the team in what could be an historic victory for the school and also a huge boost for rugby in the North East.
